Tick Removal Guide for Boston Terriers

Tick Removal Guide for Boston Terriers

Finding a tick on your Boston Terrier can be a bit of a "yikes" moment, but don't worry—you’ve got this! Because Bostons have such short, sleek coats and absolutely love a good snuggle, they are actually the perfect candidates for a quick "tick check" spa session.

Here is a friendly guide to keeping your little "American Gentleman" (or lady!) safe and tick-free.

Make it a Cuddle Ritual

Since Bostons are basically professional Velcro dogs, use that to your advantage! After a walk through the woods or long grass, turn your tick check into a winding-down ritual.

The "Armpit" Check: Yes, your Boston has armpits! Ticks love those warm, hidden spots.

The Full Body Scan: Run your hands over them while you're relaxing on the sofa. Check the groin, behind the ears, around that cute muzzle, and even between those tiny toe pads.

Year-Round Love: Even though it’s chilly out, our milder winters mean ticks stay active longer. Keep the checks going all year long!

Spotting the "Tiny Terrors"

A tick usually feels like a small, smooth bump—sometimes you’ll feel it before you see it. They can look like a skin tag or a bit of dirt, but if you look closely, you’ll see eight tiny legs. If you find one, don’t panic! Just remember: the sooner it’s off, the better.

The Right Way to Remove a Tick

To keep your pup safe, skip the old "urban legends" like nail polish or matches—those can actually make things worse.

Use a Tick Tool: Grab a tick removal tool (we have them on our Amazon Storefront). It looks like a tiny fork and makes the job so much easier.

Twist and Lift: Slide the tool under the tick, give it a gentle twist, and lift.

No Squeezing: Try not to squeeze the tick’s body, as we want to avoid any "backwash" into your dog's skin.

Clean Up: Flush the tick down the loo, clean the bite spot with a little dog-safe antiseptic, and give yourself (and your dog!) a pat on the back.

When to Call the Vet

Most of the time, once the tick is gone, your Boston will be back to their zoomies in no time. However, keep an eye on them for a few weeks. If they seem unusually tired, have a fever, or seem stiff/lame, give your vet a shout.

Pro Tip: Next time you’re at the vet, ask about the best preventative treats or drops to keep those hangers-on away for good.

In the meantime, keep up the belly rubs and ear scratches—it’s the best way to keep your best Boston Terrier safe!
